Adaware A basic 'scan and fix' for spyware and malware may be enough for many home computer users, but the savvy home user and small business owner wants and needs something more... real-time scanning, well, this ain't it. In have lost faith in this program and I for one won't use their product any longer.........While not free the very good AVG Internet Security Home Edition Mentioned just below is far better. And the Spysweeper is also very good. But I am mentioning a few of my favorites. The freeware anti-virus is at the bottom of the page. In our shop we use other tools as well to help your P.C. Click here, they may very well save you a trip to the repair shop. . This is another good all purpose program designed to keep all the different Malware programs off your computer. If had to pick a single program it would probably be this one. .
This one is a killer. If you have something on your PC that nothing else will cure, try these guys. It is too severe for me to run all the time but I keep it handy cause it will usually clean the tough stuff right on out. Symptoms of infected PC 1. Your usual home page is changed and you have no idea why. 2. An unexpected toolbar appears and you don't know how it got there. 3. Your firewall alerts you to an unknown program or process trying to access the Internet, or one trying to access your machine. 4. New shortcuts appear on your desktop or your task bar, or even your system tray that you didn't put there. 5. New entries appear in your favorites folder that you didn't put there. 6. Your computer starts acting sluggish and slow (this could be from a number of reasons however). 8.Excessive popup windows, unable to stop or close. 7. Excessive CPU usage. Each bit of malware has its own program, and, thus uses resources. 9. If you have AdAware or Spybot S&D, should either one open, and appear for a few seconds, then disappear(without scanning), more than likely, its avariant of CoolWeb infection. 10. Every time you do a search, you wind up at the same unusual, unknown web site, or, you get 1-3 pages of unrelated search results, before getting to your actual search. 11. There is a new program, in the add/remove section of your control panel 12. Your firewall, is mysteriously turned off, same with anti virus apps. 13. Your unable to access any of these: task manager, regedit, MSCONFIG, they just pop up, and disappear 14. You cannot access the internet. If you have multiple symptoms, its possible you have more than just ad/mal/spyware. Its more likely, you have Trojans or worms. Follow the steps on the page 'I think I'm infected, now what?'. AVG My pick of all the anti-virus stuff out there. This program is free and it is absolutely great!

Adaware - http://www.lavasoftusa.com AdAware supposedly scans memory, registry, hard, removable and optical drives and detects and removes a wide range of adware/spyware. This once was a really good product but I don't trust it any longer so use it at your own risk.
