Find It For Sure
The Library of Congress http://lcweb.loc.gov, the U.S.
national library, is reputed to carry a copy of every book published in the country. It doesn't
really. But it does contain more than 17 million books, including foreign publications, plus
something like 100 million other items, such as maps, manuscripts, multimedia, and much, much more. If what you're
looking for isn't listed at LC -- well . . . are you sure you didn't imagine it?
Head straight to the catalog http://catalog.loc.gov .
If you're looking for books by a specific author, if you know the title of the
book and need to confirm the author, or if you want
to see all the books about a subject, use the Subj-Name-Title-Call# search option. If you have
a more complicated search in mind, such as a search for an exact phrase or for books on a particular topic written
by a certain
author, choose the Guided Keyword search. Command Keyword is for
searchers who know how to use the LC's index codes; this option is not for the faint of heart. And finally, the
Keyword search lets you type in several words, any of which can appear in the catalog records. Good Luck!
